Thursday, April 28, 2005 - Web posted at 9:47:44 GMT Uproar over ban of bicycle taxis BUJUMBURA - Burundi's government has banned bicycle taxis, long a key means of transport in the impoverished central African nation, putting an estimated 100 000 drivers out of work and creating public uproar. |
|
"The Minister for Transport, Posts and Telecommunications signed yesterday a ministerial ordinance that prohibits the operation of bicycle taxis on all streets in the republic for road safety reasons," the radio said. Ndikumugongo acknowledged the decision was controversial but defended the step, saying it was necessary to reduce accidents, many of them fatal, caused by bicycle taxis which often weave perilously through motorised traffic. |
