State of jobs in the Karas Region

KEETMANSHOOP - The labour force participation rate for the Karas Region is almost 74 per cent with hardly any differences in urban and rural areas according to the 2001 Population and Housing Census report.

According to the Karas Regional Constituency comparison report of the census released yesterday, Oranjemund has the highest labour force participation rate at 86,3 per cent followed closely by the Luderitz constituency at 84 per cent.

The Berseba constituency has the lowest rate at 52,1 per cent.

The report noted that about 25 000 people aged about 15 years are economically active in the region.

The Luderitz and Oranjemund constituencies have the highest employment rates as most of the industrial sectors in the region are found there.

Luderitz is boosted by the major fishing industries at the town while Oranjemund is famous for its diamond mining.

The labour force participation rate is the proportion of the economically active population in a given population group that is that the number of economically active persons divided by the total population in the same population group.

The public and private services are the major job providers employing about 10 800 people.

The agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing sectors are other major job providers in the region with over 8 500 people, closely followed by the manufacturing industry including mining and quarrying, electricity, gas, water supply and construction sectors.

The wholesale and retail sector provides just over 1 100 jobs.

A total of about 1 400 people employed in the region have attained tertiary level education qualifications while the bulk of the employed people at just over 11 500 only have attended primary school.

The unemployment rate of the region is 27 per cent.
