Not Enough Soccer Coverage

AS a regular reader of The Namibian newspaper I'm deeply worried at the way our mouthpiece carries on with the superficially styled sports news coverage.

It is an undeniable fact that much has to be done toward enhancing the sports news coverage, notably soccer.

Our sports editor, I presume has taken to the assumption that the majority of Namibians are accessed to cable TVs, which I refute.

Whenever majorities are accessed to TVs or not, newspapers worldwide still remain to provide for details and substantial coverage of events.

So far, to show this inconsistency, there has been no coverage of the Olympic semi-final and final soccer match results.

Which national soccer team clinched the gold medal? What of African soccer representatives in that competition? Who needs a reminder that soccer in the number one sport, yet our sports reporters and editors fail to take note of that.

Recently, the World Cup 2004 preliminary round soccer matches were played both in Europe and Africa zones.

Although Europe matches were given an extensive coverage, the same did not apply to African matches.

What of the soccer matches involving Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria and Cote D'Ivoire? Those are considered to be among African's soccer giants.

May I advise the editorial staff to at least allocate a weekly full sports page, especially to football.

These seem to be minor issues.

However, if they continue to persist, readers may switch to other (newspapers).

The Namibian is a praiseworthy newspaper.

Do not compel us to do so.
