Friday, October 24, 2003 - Web posted at 10:02:46 GMT MP expelled for anti-war comments LONDON - Britain's governing Labour Party announced yesterday it had expelled its maverick member of parliament George Galloway over his outspoken criticism of the Iraq war. |
|
Galloway (48) was suspended from the party in May following an interview with Arabic news channel Abu Dhabi TV on March 28 - eight days into the war - in which he accused British Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George Bush of invading Iraq "like wolves". Speaking after he was expelled, Galloway said: "It was a travesty of justice, a politically motivated kangaroo court whose verdict clearly had been written in advance in the best tradition of show trials," he told reporters. "Mr Blair's response to the mistake of the war is to attack those who stood against the war and root them out of British politics". Blair's decision to go to war provoked widespread resistance in Britain and his popularity has since slumped. Galloway said: "Mr Blair's response to the disaster of the war is to attack those who stood against the war and to root them out of British politics". - Nampa-AFP-Reuters |
