Namibia demolish Uganda 82-13

CORRY IHUHUA

The Namibian rugby team beat Uganda 82-13 in the semi-final of the Confederation of African Rugby Cup (CAR) played at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium yesterday.

The Namibians have now qualified for the final of the competition and will play either Madagascar or Morocco who are expected to meet each other later this month.

The Namibians ran in 12 tries against a woeful Ugandan side that struggled with most facets of the game during the poorly attended match.

Captain and centre Corne Powell and winger Melric Africa each scored twice, while a host of forwards also rolled over for tries in the one-sided match.

Namibia were already 42-10 up at half-time.

The forwards who scored for Namibia included Morris Kapitako, who was drafted into the senior side after some good performances for the Namibian A side.

Herman Lintvelt, Cor van Tonder and Wolfie Duvenhage were the other forwards who went over the try line.

Du Preez Grobler, Rudie van Vuuren (who managed 8 conversions), Ronaldo Pedro and the exciting Sean van Rooi also capitalised on poor Ugandan defending and dotted down.

Substitute flyhalf Morne Schreuder added four conversions to give the Namibians a 100 per cent record in the goal-kicking department.

Namibia's Head Coach Dave Waterston, who resides in South Africa, did not attend the match, but this did not deter the players from going full-out during the match.

Christo Alexander served as coach for the day.

Waterston, who works in the insurance industry in Johannesburg, is currently at the centre of controversy after his assistant coach Paul Kaplan resigned, while two of his key players withdrew from the Rugby World Cup squad over his management style.

Kaplan called it a day after he had coaching differences with Waterston, accusing him being arrogant, while the two players also felt that he was not the right man for the job.

After yesterday's encounter, some players who spoke to The Namibian expressed disappointment that Waterston was not in Windhoek for the match.

The Namibian team is also expected to play several matches in South Africa before going to the World Cup, which will take place in Australia from October 10.

At this stage, Namibia's 30-man squad has not been announced.

Indications are that it will be made known today An official yesterday said the side "will in all likelihood be named on Monday (today)" as the coaching staff had still wanted to see how certain players performed against Uganda.

Waterston has so far named a preliminary squad of 30 players.
