Damaseb want goals from Warriors

CORRY IHUHUA

NAMIBIA Football Association President (NFA) Petrus Damaseb says that although the national team is praised for having the best tactical approach in most matches they are still failing to score goals.

"People come to me after the Brave Warriors have lost matches and heap praises on our tactical performance, but I tell them that we did not win, simply because we did not score".

Damaseb was addressing players, officials and invited guests at a football awards ceremony held in the city on Saturday.

He said it was useless for a team to play well but then fail to score the goals that could win them matches.

"I want the national team players to score and get money for that," Damaseb said as he handed an award to Warriors mascot Robbie Savage.

Savage got the money for his undying support for the national side which in recent times has suffered a slump in form.

On the domestic front, Damaseb urged Namibia Premier League (NPL) clubs to strive for professionalism.

At this stage, the NPL has proposed the establishment of a professional league that is supposed to start as a pilot project.

No time-frame has been put in place for the introduction of a professional league, although the issue was raised at the NFA Congress on July 26 at Keetmanshoop.

City of Windhoek Mayor Matheus Shikongo spoke about destructive elements that are jeopardising football development.

"When players lack discipline, they will indulge in alcohol-abuse and other irresponsible behaviour, and these are not healthy for sports, particularly football.

I am afraid, this has been the discovery that has been made and which holds back the excellence of our players," said the Mayor.

He said people criticise the NFA for the poor performance of footballers, particularly the Brave Warriors, while many of the Warriors lack the necessary discipline, Shikongo observed.

He also urged match officials to be disciplined.

"I hope that referees ... are conscious of the fact that their credibility as referees on any soccer field determines the standard of any soccer match," he said.

He applauded the NFA for the "notable project of constructing the soccer house which is to cost N$6 million," adding that the City of Windhoek is proud to be responsible for the construction of the Katutura Soccer Stadium.

Damaseb said the consortium and the association spent in excess of N$680 000 on hosting the annual soccer awards.

Players and officials in the divisions that resort under the NFA were honoured at the event for their contribution to football.

The NFA also gave the following awards to the rest of the divisions, apart from the NPL.
