Man arrested in Witbooi case

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE Police arrested a 35-year-old man at Leonardville on Tuesday in connection with the hit-and-run accident in which a grandson of Deputy Prime Minister Hendrik Witbooi died.

Police Deputy Commissioner, Hophni Hamufungu, said they arrested the man from the Rus in Vrede farm at around 14h00 when he visited nearby Leonardville on Tuesday.

Dawid Dirk 'Riaan' Petersen (27) was killed in Windhoek two weeks ago while walking back to the Deputy Prime Minister's residence with Witbooi's granddaughter, Edith 'Mildred' Witbooi (22).

The two were struck by a vehicle which then sped away from the scene.

Another grandson of the Deputy Prime Minister, Willem M 'Timo' Witbooi, found his seriously injured relatives lying on the side of Robert Mugabe Avenue, next to the back entrance to the Centaurus High School hostel.

Petersen died at the Katutura State Hospital a few hours later.

Mildred remains hospitalised.

The incident happened barely a week after Mother Paulina '!Gas' Witbooi, the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister, passed away.

Hamufungu said the Police understood that the suspect was in Windhoek on the day of the hit-and-run incident.

It is believed that parts of the vehicle found at the accident scene were matched to the suspect's vehicle.

He is expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court today to face charges of culpable homicide, defeating the ends of justice and failure to report an accident.

From the debris at the accident scene, it seemed that the vehicle involved was a later model white Nissan.

A piece of a broken bumper was found on the scene.

The driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle and mounted the pavement, hitting the Witbooi grandchildren.

The tyre markings on the railing and those on the pavement indicated that they were struck while on the pavement.

It is believed they may have been lying near the roadside for several hours before they were discovered.

Petersen will be laid to rest on Saturday at Gibeon.
