Siblings take own lives within months of each other

OSWALD SHIVUTE

A nine-year-old boy who hanged himself in the North at the weekend is the second member of his family to commit suicide within a few months.

Genesis Ndeshaanya Matheus was found hanging from a tree at Olupito in the Omusati Region on Saturday.

The Police confirmed yesterday that Genesis's older sister, Selma Matheus, committed suicide at the family's house at Olupito in April.

Genesis was a Grade Four pupil at the John Shekudja Combined School near Onandjaba-Okalongo.

Chief Inspector Kristof Nakanyala told The Namibian the Police were still investigating why the boy killed himself.

"It is really a shock that a child commits suicide by hanging himself," Nakanyala said.

He added that a relative had told the Police that there appeared to be no major problems at home that would have prompted two siblings to commit suicide within five months of each other.

Olupito, the site of the two suicides, is near Oshuundje where a young woman, Lidwina Engombe, hanged herself after stringing up her one-year-old baby last month.

The Okalongo Police told The Namibian that Genesis was buried at Okathitu yesterday.

* Earlier the Police issued an incorrect report stating that Matheus was 12 years old and was from Ohipi village.

"This was incorrect," said Chief Inspector Nakanyala.

His other name was not Ndeshoyonya as previously reported but Ndeshaanya while the inquest investigation is to be carried out by the Okalongo Police and not the Okahao Police.
