Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - Web posted at 7:20:44 GMT Kapofi says President did not interfere TANGENI AMUPADHICHAIRMAN of the Social Security Commission, Frans Kapofi, said yesterday that President Sam Nujoma did not interfere with the appointment of a CEO for the SSC. |
|
According to Kapofi, a meeting he and Labour Minister Marco Hausiku had with the President was not called by the head of state. He described the meeting as a mere information session about developments at the SSC. Kapofi, who confirmed that a meeting had taken place, dismissed a report in The Namibian that Nujoma had "summoned" them. "The meeting was requested by the Minister of Labour to brief the President on developments at the Social Security Commission and how the board is doing" in their effort to "stabilise the commission". "I was never summoned by the President," he said yesterday. Kapofi also said: "I cannot remember the President saying 'even if it means paying legal costs you should not appoint the person'". Sources close to State House said Nujoma had told Kapofi that Koot van der Merwe was not to be appointed as Chief Executive Officer. The Namibian understands that trade unions, despite being represented on the board that appointed Van der Merwe, later began to lobby politicians against his becoming the CEO. Van der Merwe has since been informed that the offer has been withdrawn. Kapofi would not comment further. The SSC board is expected to meet today to finalise the matter. The board has the prerogative to appoint the CEO in consultation with the Minister. Hausiku is believed to have agreed to the appointment but now appears to be changing his position following pressure from trade unions. |
