DTA accuses Swapo of using NP tactics

THE DTA said yesterday that Swapo's policy of reserving top jobs for "loyal" party members reminds it "of the old National Party tactics".

The opposition party was responding to reports that a white Namibian, with no known allegiance to the ruling party, has been told that he would no longer be appointed as head of the Social Security Commission.

The move was allegedly a result of President Sam Nujoma's objection to his appointment.

The Namibian understands that Koot van der Merwe's lack of links with the ruling party and skin colour cost him the job for which a contract had been signed.

The DTA, itself a creation of the apartheid South African regime under the National Party, drew the similarities between the former foes saying Swapo was engaging in a "gross form of government intimidation and blackmail, because anyone who wants to get anywhere in life must obviously become a Swapo party member in order to be considered for or promoted to a senior position".

"While this continues, this Government will never succeed in ridding the country of the rampant corruption which President Sam Nujoma so often vows to fight tooth and nail".

Johan de Waal, the DTA Chairman, said in a statement that the decision to withdraw the job offer "smacks of ethnic cleansing" and "makes a mockery of the policy of national reconciliation".

The party expressed concern that Van der Merwe may institute a claim for damages that the taxpayer would have to pay for.
