SSC board mum on controversial appointment

TANGENI AMUPADHI

THE Board of the Social Security Commission says it has made its decision on the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer for the SSC, but declined to elaborate.

The board met yesterday amid intense political pressure from trade unions and Swapo loyalists to dump its candidate for the SSC top post, Koot van der Merwe, and choose a person with known and stronger allegiance to the ruling party.

The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) has reportedly lobbied the Minister of Labour, Marco Hausiku, and President Sam Nujoma to oppose Van der Merwe's appointment.

Hausiku, accompanied by SSC board Chairman, Frans Kapofi, and his deputy, Petrus Damaseb, recently met with Nujoma, during which some sources said the Head of State expressed his disapproval of Van der Merwe's appointment.

But Kapofi said Nujoma had not interfered in the appointment.

Van der Merwe has since been told that his impending move to the SSC has been cancelled.

He has been given back his old job of General Manager Finance at Namibia Ports Authority (NamPort).

Kapofi yesterday said the board meeting "went well" and that "the concern" raised by Hausiku about the appointment of a CEO was discussed.

He declined to divulge the outcome.

The SSC issued a press statement saying the board "had before it" presentations from the NUNW and the Employers' Federation, both of which were represented on the board of directors.

The statement said the commission will only make public its decision "as soon as the Minister's views on the matter have been obtained".
