Tumba takes home the booty

ERICA GEBHARDT in JOHANNESBURG

CHERISE Makabale of Zambia is the first woman to win an African Big Brother! And Tumba, as she fondly became known, was ecstatic when interviewed by The Namibian at the M-Net studios in Randburg, Johannesburg, last night.

"I'm so excited! This is the best, especially ... as I'm a woman," exclaimed Cherise.

Cherise won BBA by a long shot, taking most of the country votes from Africa, including Namibia.

Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia all felt that Tumba most deserved the USD 100 000 and voted accordingly.

More than 1 000 fans gathered at the BBA house in Randburg to see the housemates united once more - this time for the Grand Finale of the most controversial and exciting BB ever! Cherise said she would consult with her family before deciding on exactly what to do with her fortune.

But, she added: "I want to buy a house for my father".

It was a nerve-wracking experience attending the live show as the anticipation mounted and first Gaetano and then Warona left .

The tension built to a crescendo with only Tapuwa, Mwisho and Cherise in the house.

Then it was Tapuwa's turn to go, followed by Mwisho and Cherise, who spilled those joyous tears until after she joined Mark Pilgrim on stage.

Cherise was met on stage by her mother, sister and an aunt.

They had quite a time and Cherise's Mom could be seen grooving on stage and carrying the suitcase holding Cherise's fortunes.

African stars Femi Kuti and Brenda Fassie had the crowd stomping their feet and grooving with joy during the show, while earlier Kenyan hip hoppers, Gidigidi Majimaji, helped get the crowd in the mood.

Apart from Cherise, Tapuwa, Abby and Stefan drew the loudest cheers from the crowd.

Bruna did a great job with her new songs and it was evident that the housemates were glad to be back together after so long.
