Summer's here and the time changes

WERNER MENGES

SUMMER makes its official return on Sunday when Namibia's clocks and watches have to be adjusted an hour forward.

With the arrival of the seven-month-long summer time period, Namibians will be able to enjoy an extra hour of sunshine after work each day, although early risers will now find themselves facing a darker dawn when they get up in the morning.

In terms of the Namibian Time Act, which introduced differing Summer and Winter times to Namibia from 1994, the country's official time will return to being two hours ahead of Greenwich time at 2am on Sunday.

That means that, come 2am on Sunday, the time will officially change to 03h00.

The country is set to return to winter time again at 02h00 on the first Sunday in April, which will fall on April 4 next year.

The time will then again be adjusted an hour backwards, to be an hour ahead of Greenwich time for five months, until the first Sunday in September.

According to the Meteorological Service of Namibia the sun will set at 17h42 in Windhoek today, and will rise at 05h57 in the capital tomorrow.

After the next night's time change, the sun will rise at 06h56 in Windhoek on Sunday.

Summer time's first sunset in the capital will be at 18h43 on Sunday.

Days will get progressively longer until Summer reaches its height in the Southern Hemisphere with the longest day of the year, the Summer solstice, on December 22.

Sunset is expected to take place at 19h35 in Windhoek on that day, according to information provided by the Meteorological Service yesterday.

In Windhoek the latest sunsets of the Summer will be in the days of mid-January next year, when the sun will dip below the horizon only at 19h41.

From there, it will be a gradual return to earlier nights, until Winter time - and for late workers daily drives back home in the darkness - make its come-back.
