Man in court over attacks on tourists

LINDSAY DENTLINGER

THE man allegedly behind two attacks on tourists visiting the dinosaur tracks on the Farm Otjihaenmaperero near Kalkfeld has been arrested.

Festus Amukwaya (25) was an employee on the farm until he was dismissed last year.

Police spokesperson Sergeant James Matengu told The Namibian yesterday that Amukwaya was arrested on the Farm Elhorst, also in the Kalkfeld area, on August 23.

The Police believe that Amukwaya is also allegedly linked to two other tourist robberies in the area.

He faced four charges of robbery - two of them armed - when he appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate's Court last week.

Amukwaya is also charged with kidnapping in relation to the attacks on the German couple of Johannes Bienemann and Ilka Jacobus on August 3 and on Swiss tourists Peter and Annelen Kress on August 15.

In both instances he is alleged to have overpowered the couples as they were leaving the farm.

Bienemann and Jacobus were threatened with a knife and knobkierie and forced into their rented 4x4.

Their assailant then drove them around until the vehicle ran out of petrol.

Amukwaya allegedly robbed them of several hundred Euros and various personal items.

Less than two weeks later, the Kress couple were attacked when leaving the farm.

This time Amukwaya is alleged to have robbed the victims of money and personal documents, and to have threatened them with an iron rod.

He also took charge of their rented vehicle, until they managed to force him off the road and make their getaway.

Matengu says Amukwaya allegedly committed the other two robberies in 2000 and in February 2003.

He is currently in Police custody.

His case was postponed to October 6 so that he can obtain legal representation.
