Five regions recorded turn-outs of over 100 per cent. Karas, Erongo, Kunene, Otjozondjupa and Omaheke all registered more voters than were estimated in the 2001 census. According to the 2001 National Census, Namibia has 968 426 eligible voters. Some 930 283 of them were registered during the recent registration campaign. The electoral body had aimed to register at least 800 000 voters. According to statistics released by the Electoral Commission yesterday, the largest number of people were registered in the Khomas Region where 161 426 people got their new voter cards, followed by Ohangwena (98 592), Omusati (97 317), Kavango (88 480), Erongo (80 208), Oshana (77 969), Oshikoto (69 196), Otjozondjupa (68 885), Karas (50 387), Kunene (38 116), Hardap (37 967), Omaheke (35 605) and Caprivi (33 112). The Karas Region, which according to the last census had 40 881 potential voters, recorded the largest turnout at 123 per cent, followed by Erongo (115 per cent) and Kunene (110 per cent). The Otjozondjupa and Omaheke Regions also exceeded the 100 per cent mark with both of them recording 102 per cent. |
