New leaders for Nantu

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE Namibia National Teachers' Union (Nantu) has a new leadership team following last weekend's seventh national congress at Otjiwarongo.

Newly-elected Secretary General, Meriam Hamutenya-Katonyala, said her predecessor, Ndapewa Nghipandulwa, was elected as the new President.

Nghipandulwa is taking up a position that was vacant for the most of the past three-year term after Redemptus Kamari was forced to resign following allegations of fraud.

Joseph Ndinyando was elected as new deputy president.

Hamutenya-Katonyala will be deputised by Basilius Haingura.

Teachers at the congress decided that Nantu should establish a bursary scheme and a micro-loan scheme in partnership with Namic and Likwafela as well as a retirement fund and death benefit for its paid-up members.

The congress urged the Ministry of Basic Education, Sport and Culture to stop closing farm schools in the country.

It also called on Government to provide extra teachers to give variety of subject choices for students rather than forcing them to do subjects in which they are not interested.
