Namibia takes ODI cricket series

CORRY IHUHUA

SUPERB batting and clinical bowling from the Namibian cricket side ensured a five wicket victory over Zimbabwe A at the United Cricket Grounds yesterday.

Namibia took One Day International (ODI) Series 2-1.

The Namibians lost to Zimbabwe by 11 runs on Sunday, but levelled the series with a 31 run triumph on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe decided to bat after winning the toss yesterday and posted 272/9 in their 50 overs.

But Namibia passed the total in 47,3 overs with just five wickets down.

Opener Jan Berrie Burger was inspirational yet again.

The blonde, bulky Burger, who scored a whopping 92 runs on Tuesday, continued with his magnificent batting form as he smashed eight fours and five sixes on his way to 83 runs from just 53 balls.

The young Marius van der Merwe, who was part of a 114-run opening partnership with Burger, scored 78 runs from 128 balls.

Former captain Danie Keulder came in at number four in this the match and only managed four runs, compared to the 79 runs he scored on Tuesday.

Gerrie Snyman improved his credentials as an allrounder with 42 runs, while the consistent Stephan Swanepoel struck three sixes and two fours to rack up 37 not out from only 35 balls.

Captain Deon Kotze settled for only 10 runs, but was the best bowler taking three wickets for 39 off his 10 overs.

In his six overs, Snyman collected two wickets for 40 runs.

Newcomer Kolla Burger took two wickets in his allotted 10 overs, conceding 58 runs.

Fast bowler Bjorn 'Bones' Kotze and Danie Keulder took a wicket each.

For Zimbabwe, Gavin Ewing recorded the highest score of 62 runs, while Travis Friend added the second highest of 36.

Most of the Zimbabwean batsmen got double figures with Craig Wishart scoring 27, Richard Sims (27), Vusimuzi Sibanda (10), Charles Coventry (29) and Stuart Matsikenyeri (23).

Zimbabwe's best bowler for the day was Matsikenyeri, who took three for 33, while Ewing took two for 28.

The Namibian side looked more motivated that their counterparts, with officials describing their batting as responsible and dedicated.

They were simply in high spirits and that contributed to their win today, and I hope that kind of attitude will give them the edge in their next matches said Rinette Hulme, an official at the match.

Namibia plays their next first three-day match from Saturday at the Wanderers Cricket Club.

The starting time is set for 09h30.
