CORRY IHUHUA

THE Namibia President's XI cricket team beat Zimbabwe A by 31 runs in their second One Day International (ODI) played at Wanderers Cricket Club yesterday.

Namibia racked up a huge total - 329/6 off their 50 overs - after winning the toss.

Zimbabwe reached 298 all out in reply.

The bulky Namibia batsman, Jan Berrie Burger, got Namibia's innings off to a great start as he smashed 92 runs off 81 balls.

He was ably assisted by the reliable Danie Keulder, who recorded 79 runs.

The two top order batsmen shared a partnership of 129 runs.

Several other Namibian batsmen chipped in with useful scores.

Stephan Swanepoel scored 38, Louis Burger 33, Sarel Burger 23 not out and Marius van der Merwe 14.

Zimbabwe's best bowlers were Mluleki Nkala who took two wickets for 53 runs, Barney Rogers one for 54 runs and Travis Friend one for 33 runs.

Medium pace bowler Louis Burger collected four wickets for 45 runs for Namibia, while his captain Deon Kotze, managed two for 42.

Fast bowler Sarel Burger scooped a further two wickets for 44 runs.

Zimbabwe's batsmen failed to dominate the Namibian bowling although Richard Sims hit 42 runs , Barney Rogers also 42, and Charles Coventry 39.

Namibia Cricket Board (NCB) President Laurie Pieters said that with over 620 runs scored by both sides the match proved an exciting spectacle for those who arrived at the Wanderers.

He added that Namibia's strong all round batting performance was encouraging and showed the side had improved since the World Cup in April.

The three-match one-day series is now level at 1-1 as Zimbabwe won the first encounter on Sunday.

The two sides will play in their last ODI tomorrow at the United Cricket Grounds, before going into their first three-day match which starts on August 30.
