International showjumping challenge in Windhoek

THE Gymkhana Club Windhoek will host the Federation Equestre International (FEI) World Jumping Challenge at its grounds in Academia from today until Sunday.

The FEI's World Jumping Challenge was initiated in 1979 to provide less experienced riders with an opportunity to compete on an international level without having to leave their own countries.

The competitions are held under identical conditions in over 50 countries.

Nations involved in this programme are those who do not traditionally take part in international competitions.

There are two categories, A and B, of different standards.

In 2001, Perfomance Sales International (PSI) became the new sponsor (formerly sponsored by Samsung).

PSI is backed by two internationally acclaimed equestrian experts, showjumping expert Paul Schockemohle and Dressage expert Ullrich Kasselmann.

This competition leads to a final held annually at Ullrich Kasselman's stables.

In 2001, the Namibian Team won the overall event in their group, and Tanja Davidow, the Namibian winner for category A - qualified to participate in the FEI finals in Hagen, Germany.

In 2002, Category A was won by Corinna Andreae on Lancerac Davetsaub and Category B by Sumari Piepmeyer on Pirate Prince Davenport.

For this weekend's event, entrance is free and refreshments are available.

The event starts at 12h00 on Friday.
