Workers at Tanzania's largest bank end strike

DAR ES SALAAM, June 27 (AFP) - Employees of Tanzania's largest commercial bank, the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), went back to work Thursday after staging a strike to damand better pay and conditions.

"We have reached a fruitful consensus during talks with the (NBC) management," trade union leader Boniface Nkakatisi told Nampa-AFP.

"Workers have gone back to work," he added.

Hundreds of NBC employees had boycotted work on Wednesday, inconveniencing many clients in the bank's 37 branches.

"It was a big loss and frustration to customers. We are going to apologise for the disruption," said NBC's spokesperson Maxwell Pirikisi.

South African financial group ABSA has a 70 percent stake in the NBC, which was formerly wholly-owned by the Tanzania government. The bank employs about 1,000 people. - Nampa-AFP
