White man in S.African court for killing black bus driver and two passengers

PRETORIA, June 18 (AFP) - A white South African accused of killing a bus driver and two passengers and wounding four other passsengers, all of them black, appeared briefly in court here Tuesday supported by a group of white right-wingers.

Jan Gabriel De Wet Kritzinger, 30, faces three murder charges and four attempted murder charges.

He is accused of boarding a bus in a suburb in Pretoria, which was bound for a nearby black township, on January 12, 2000 and opening fire on passengers without saying a word.

He then jumped off the bus and rode off on a motorcycle.

Magistrate Kallie Bosch remanded the case until July 5 to allow Kritzinger to obtain legal aid.

He was arrested on Friday in the northeastern town of Nylstroom, after being on the run for more than two years.

A notorious right-wing killer, 'White Wolf' Barend Strydom, was among a band of khaki-clad men, many sporting beards, in the courtroom to support Kritzinger, the South African press agency SAPA reported.

Strydom killed seven black people and wounded 16 more in a shooting spree at a public square in Pretoria in 1989.

Strydom, who was initially sentenced to death, was later released as part of an agreement between the former government and the ruling African National Congress party. - Nampa-AFP
