DRC volcano erupts, Goma out of danger

KIGALI, July 26 (AFP) - A volcano located near the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma erupted overnight, without posing a threat to the town, which was partly destroyed by lava from a different volcano in January.

Local government officials said Mount Nyamuragira, 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Goma, erupted late Thursday from a fissure on its western flank.

Lava was flowing into the nearby Virungas Park, one local official said. While Goma was not threatened, the lava was flowing towards three villages: Rutshuru, Rumangabo and Sake.

When the nearby Mount Nyiragongo erupted on January 14, Goma's entire population fled en masse, returning a few days later to find large parts of the city engulfed or destroyed by lava.

Nyamuragira is the most active of the Virunga range of volcanoes and erupts every year. - Nampa-AFP
