DRC volcano erupts, Goma out of dangerLocal government officials said Mount Nyamuragira, 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Goma, erupted late Thursday from a fissure on its western flank. Lava was flowing into the nearby Virungas Park, one local official said. While Goma was not threatened, the lava was flowing towards three villages: Rutshuru, Rumangabo and Sake. When the nearby Mount Nyiragongo erupted on January 14, Goma's entire population fled en masse, returning a few days later to find large parts of the city engulfed or destroyed by lava. Nyamuragira is the most active of the Virunga range of volcanoes and erupts every year. - Nampa-AFP |
