Southern Africans meet on food security in drought-stricken region

MAPUTO, June 2 (AFP) - Southern African agriculture ministers are due to meet in Mozambique's capital Maputo on Friday to dicuss food security in the drought-stricken region, officials announced Tuesday.

"We are to seek common strategies to tackle the current food deficit in our region", Mozambican Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Helder Muteia told Nampa-AFP.

Muteia said the agriculture ministers of the 14-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) will also discuss the sustainable use of regional resources including land, flora and wildlife.

A number of protocols are due to be signed during the meeting, he said.

The ministers are also expected to propose a date for the inauguration of the Great Limpopo International Park linking South Africa's Kruger National Park, Mozambique's Limpopo National Park and Zimbabwe's Gonrezou.

Muteia said the Kruger-Limpopo-Gonrezou park will be one of the world's biggest, housing all types of animals, from elephants, rhinos and buffalos to beautiful African birds.

"We are combining three different environments to providing tourists with a unique opportunity to cross easily from one country to another to enjoy the wildlife and the landscape of the region", he said. - Nampa-AFP
