Zambian police says alleged coup plotters to be arrested soon

LUSAKA, July 2 (AFP) - Zambian police said it will soon arrest people who were allegedly plotting to oust the government of President Levy Mwanawasa, a state-run newspaper said Tuesday.

Police Inspector General Francis Musonda said the police had intensified investigations and will soon effect some arrests, the state-owned Zambia Daily Mail report said.

Mwanawasa announced last Friday that some people, whom he did not name, were plotting a coup in which he was to be assassinated together with key leaders in his government.

The announcement of the coup came at a time when the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) is facing serious internal divisions with one faction supporting Mwanawasa while the other is loyal to ex-president Frederick Chiluba.

Mwanawasa will make a state of the nation address to the national assembly on July 11, his legal aide Darlington Mwape said. - Nampa-AFP
