Thursday, August 8, 2002 - Web posted at 9:14:39 am GMT Bomb blast in Nepali capital wounds sixKATHMANDU, Aug 8 (Reuters) - A bomb blast at a business college wounded at least six people on Thursday in the Nepali capital police said. Nepal's state-run radio said Maoist "terrorists" fighting to topple the constitutional monarchy were behind the blast at the college in a residential part of Kathmandu. "The explosion has caused extensive damage to the college building," a police officer said. A wave of bombings in recent months has shaken Kathmandu, the capital of the poverty-stricken nation, whose government is battling an increasingly bloody Maoist rebellion aimed at setting up a one-party communist republic in the world's only Hindu kingdom. None of the six wounded in Thursday's bombing at the College of Applied Business was in danger, the police officer said. A man living near the college told Reuters five to six people entered the premises early on Thursday. "As soon as they left, there was a blast." Officials say over 4,700 people have been killed in the conflict since 1996, more than 2,800 of them, mainly rebels, in the past eight months since Nepal ordered the army to crush the militants. The Maoist conflict has crippled Nepal's aid-dependent economy, scared away investors and hit tourism in the scenic mountainous nation that boasts Mount Everest and eight of the world's 10 tallest peaks.
