Panel beater in court over tender bribe

CHRISPIN INAMBAO

A KHORIXAS panel beater was arrested earlier this week for allegedly securing a N$5 million Government vehicles repair tender by paying a N$98 000 bribe to a civil servant, Police and Justice officials confirmed yesterday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant James Matengu and Khorixas Magistrate Clemence Hausiku confirmed the arrest of Johannes Muller (56) as well as the allegations of bribery surrounding the N$5 million Government tender.

Muller made a brief appearance in the Khorixas Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and was released on N$5 000 bail.

Muller, who pleaded not guilty to the four bribery charges, is expected to appear in court again on June 7.

Muller is the owner of Khorixas Panel Beaters where some Government vehicles are usually repaired.

It is alleged that Muller clinched a Government tender after he bribed a senior employee in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Rural Development.

The official has since been transferred to another department within the Ministry.

Contacted for comment yesterday, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Dr Vaino Shivute said: "I have not yet seen the details from the court. It is difficult discussing things that are in court.

It can cause embarrassment and a lot of problems at a later stage. It is not that I don't want to give you some information, it is because if I open my mouth this can cause a lot of damage."

It has also emerged that Police are investigating several cases at the Agriculture Ministry in which some officials are alleged to have swindled millions of dollars from public coffers through fuel card fraud.
