Cubans to witness street renaming

A CUBAN delegation will visit Namibia to witness the renaming of Peter Muller Street as Fidel Castro Street, after the legendary Cuban leader, next week.

City Mayor Matheus Shikongo informed the City Council on Wednesday that an "influential delegation" from the city of Havana will arrive on April 29 for the renaming ceremony that will take place on May 2.

The delegation departs on May 3.

The decision to rename the street, named after the second mayor of Windhoek, was allegedly bulldozed through the Council without proper consultation.

An opponent of the renaming, Ilme Schneider, who is also a City Councillor, has argued that Muller "was an integral part of the history of Windhoek".
