PM dismisses State House critics

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

PRIME Minister Hage Geingob has denied claims that Government has shown that it has its priorities upside down by allocating a huge amount of funds for the construction of a new State House instead of diverting the money to improve social services.

Defending his turf in the National Assembly on Friday, Geingob said that over the past 12 years Government had invested millions of dollars in social services such as education and health.

He was speaking during the budget debate on the Office of the President.

Geingob said the new State House, for which N$83 million has been budgeted this year, was a priority for Government.

He said the country had to think of its future leaders.

"The State House is not for Sam Nujoma. It is not for Swapo," he said.

The Prime Minister said Nujoma had sacrificed a great deal because the current State House was "not adequate from day one". If Government waited longer, the costs of building a new complex for the President could even double.

He also hit out at those who have asked why the new State House project resorts under the Office of the President and not under the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication. He said Nujoma was directly elected by the people and all the Ministries were there to assist him.
