Fares to North go up

HUGH ELLIS

PRICES on long distance minibus routes from Windhoek to the North will increase on Wednesday.

Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (Nabta) president Thomas Mulunga confirmed to The Namibian by telephone yesterday that the previous fee of N$70 will go up to between N$80 and N$85 next month.

Whether one pays N$10 or N$15 more will depend on the destination, and exact lists of these fares will be given to operators before they come into effect on Wednesday, Mulunga said.

Mulunga said new fares for Katima Mulilo and Walvis Bay were the only ones still to be announced. He expected these to be finalised by Monday.

It is understood that minibus operators who travel to Katima Mulilo initially wanted to increase prices by an amount the Nabta national executive thought excessive, hence the delay in approving the final fare.

Last Wednesday it was announced that minibus fares from Windhoek to Rehoboth would increase from N$15 to N$20, while a number of adjustments were also made for fares to other destinations in the south.
