Huge cannabis bust in capital

TWO men appeared in court yesterday in connection with the biggest drug haul -174 kg of pure cannabis - detected so far this year in Namibia.

Sakeus Benjamin and Miliza Florence Yawa were arrested during a Police operation in the early hours of Tuesday,
Sergeant James Matengu said yesterday that the cannabis (dagga) were found hidden in an old car in the yard of a residence along Omupwaka Street in Hakahana, Windhoek.

The cannabis have a street value of N$522 000.

"The duo were surprised (by the Police) at about 06h00 on Wednesday," Matengu said, adding that the house had been under Police surveillance for some time.

Benjamin, a Namibian, and Yawa, a South African, were refused bail by Magistrate Walter Mostert when they appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court.

Their case was postponed to May 27.

They were charged with dealing in cannabis, or alternatively being in possession of cannabis.
