Thursday, April 25, 2002 - Web posted at 8:35:49 pm GMT Operators reject new bus set-upBUS operators at Oshakati have rejected a new bus queuing system introduced by the Northern Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (NNBTA) recently. The issue came under the spotlight on Sunday evening during a meeting between the Oshakati Town Council and NNBTA representatives as well as bus owners and commuters. NNBTA has introduced a system, which also applies at bus stations at Ondangwa and Windhoek, where the first bus in the queue is the first to depart once it is full. A member of the Oshakati Town Council, Katrina Shimbulu, who chaired the meeting, said Oshakati bus owners are not in favour of the system. Shimbulu said it robs commuters of the right and freedom to travel on buses of their choice. She later told Nampa that the meeting, however, agreed that the bus queue should be maintained at the organised parking area at Omatala Open Market but that the commuters' freedom to choose buses they want to travel in should be respected. Shimbulu said bus owners also rejected the payment of departure fees until the NNBTA put in place proper control mechanisms. They feel that if the N$30 departure fees are collected without proper control mechanisms, the money will just disappear into the pockets of some individuals. A steering committee to ensure that proper departure fees control mechanisms are in place was elected during the meeting. - Nampa |
