Bird problems and lack of rain affect Kavango

RUNDU - Kavango Regional Governor Sebastian Karupu says crop farmers in the region expect poor harvests this year compared to last season.

Karupu made the remarks at a welcoming ceremony for NDF troops who returned from their operations in southern Angola on Monday.

He said that although peace now prevailed, some farmers in the region had not ploughed their mahangu fields because of the late rains.

The Governor urged Government to consider assisting affected families with emergency drought relief.

Some farmers complained to Nampa that birds have also damaged their crops.

Farmer Andreas Kamukwanyama said many farmers had had what they expected to be good harvests destroyed by birds. He urged the Kavango Regional Farmers' Union to look into the possibility of assisting affected farmers.

"There are no measures to control the birds properly, apart from chasing them away all day long," said one affected farmer. - Nampa
