Tuesday, April 23, 2002 - Web posted at 9:43:14 pm GMT Hake, monk quotas decreaseMAGGI BARNARD at SWAKOPMUNDTWO of the three total allowable catches (TACs) for the 2002-03 fishing season announced by Cabinet yesterday are down from last year's quotas. The 195 000 metric ton for hake is a 5 000 mt decrease on last year's quota, while the monk TAC also decreased - by 1 000 mt to 12 000. The orange roughy TAC increased - up from 1 875 mt to 2 400 mt. The fishing season was approved to start on May 1 to April 30 2003. The future of the pelagic sector is still in the balance as no announcement was made regarding this sector's TAC. Attempts yesterday to get comment from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources on when an announcement could be expected proved futile. The possibility that no quota will be allocated for the coming season has been under discussion since last year due to the continued scarcity of pilchard in Namibian waters. A joint Government and private sector delegation went to Cape Town earlier this year to discuss the possibility of Namibian vessels fishing in South African waters as a rescue option for the industry. While Minister Abraham Iyambo told The Namibian earlier that he was still awaiting a final answer from South Africa, reports from that country last month indicated that no assistance will be forthcoming. |
