Haikali vacates top union position

MAX HAMATA

NATIONAL Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) Secretary General Ranga Haikali has given up his post with the union federation.

Haikali told The Namibian yesterday he had requested the NUNW's Central Executive Committee at the weekend to relieve him of his union job so that he could run the federation's investment arm - Labour Investment Holdings (LIH) - as its Managing Director, a post he already held.

He will be replaced as Secretary General by Mineworkers' Union of Namibia (MUN) Secretary General Peter Naholo, who will be in an acting position until the next NUNW congress due in four years.

Haikali said that he also asked to "be relieved of my duties because of the workload and family commitments".

He would now be able to give adequate attention to the NUNW investment arm as opposed to his previous dual role when he was expected to lead both the federation and LIH.

At present, Haikali is also handling the human resources situation at Air Namibia in the run-up to its privatisation.

According to him, he will now be able to represent the workers' interests in Air Namibia adequately. LIH has a 10 per cent shareholding in the restructured airline.
