EU pumps N$12,2m into latrine project for schools

CHRISPIN INAMBAO

THE European Union (EU) yesterday gave N$12,2 million to Government for a latrine construction project at schools in rural Namibia, for which ex-combatants and other job-seekers will be recruited.

The latrine project will be implemented over a two-year period.
The Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Namibia, Ortiz de Zuniga, said since Independence the Namibian Government had made considerable efforts to reintegrate ex-combatants.

"Most of the European Union member states have supported this effort in one way or another," he said at yesterday's signing ceremony.

Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, Director General at the National Planning Commission (NPC), said the project "will also contribute to the social well-being of school-going children in rural areas by providing them with pit latrines and thereby contributing to the health of the nation".

Only ex-combatants born in 1973 and before will be recruited as those born after that date were too young to have been fighters, said Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.

The latrine project will be implemented by the Ministry of Basic Education, Sports and Culture, the Ministry of Higher Education, Training and Employment Creation and the Socio-Economic Integration Programme for Ex-Combatants (Sipe).

The Ministry of Health and Social Services will complement the initiative by providing environmental health education to teachers and students at schools that will benefit from the project.
