Croc kills 11-year-old girl

CONRAD ANGULA

AN 11-year-old girl was killed by a crocodile in the Kavango River on Sunday, April 14, the Police reported yesterday. The body was recovered last Wednesday.

The incident took place at Rundjarara village, approximately 65 kilometres east of Rundu.

"Kahoya F Kantana went to the field with friends for cultivation near the river. She then apparently decided to swim and was joined by her friends.

"She was caught by a crocodile and pulled into the deep water. The body was only recovered three days afterwards, on April 17," Sergeant James Matengu told The Namibian.

He said it was unusual for a body to be recovered after a crocodile attack.

"It normally takes crocodiles up to 10 minutes before they finish off their prey," he said.

* On Monday, the body of a seven-year-old boy was recovered after he drowned in the Kavango River a day earlier, Matengu said.

"Mpande Dawid Kasavi and four other kids from the Halili village, approximately 30 kilometres west of Rundu, went to the river to swim last Sunday.

"Kasavi drowned. The other kids were apparently too scared to talk about the incident until the body of the deceased was recovered," he said.

The Police have opened inquest dockets for both incidents.
