Men who are monsters at home berated in NA

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

DEPUTY Minister of Foreign Affairs Tuliameni Kalomoh has expressed anger with men who appear gentle in public but act like monsters towards their wives at home.

Speaking during the Budget debate in the National Assembly last week, Kalomoh hit out at men who do not practice what they preach.

"We subject our spouses and women in general to constant verbal abuse, physical and psychological battering and financial blackmail," he said.

Kalomoh said in some parts of Namibia, particularly the North, this tyranny manifests itself when a male relative dies and the widow becomes an instant enemy of her in-laws who descend on her like vultures.

"This harassment, in fact terrorism against women, must come to an end," he said.

He called on women and "enlightened men" to fight for change.
Kalomoh said there have been many cases of widows being chased out of their homes, while their homesteads are burned down and stripped of possessions jointly acquired by the widow and her deceased partner.

He expressed dismay at the silence of women's organisations when women were subjected to these indignities.

"To cap the whole absurdity, some women are often in the forefront of terrorising their sisters-in-law following the death of a husband. Another hypocrisy by some women is that when they lose their husbands they want to keep their joint possessions, a right they deny their in-laws," he said.

Kalomoh called on rights organisations to name and shame the culprits involved in such reactionary practices.
