Monday, April 22, 2002 - Web posted at 9:07:43 pm GMT 3 in court for murder of Austrian farmerWERNER MENGESTHREE men charged with the murder of an Austrian farmer in the Okahandja district in late 2000 made their first appearance in the High Court on Thursday. During a pre-trial hearing before Judge Sylvester Mainga the trio - the alleged actual killers, Alfeus Kahira (39) and Jeffrey Kaome (30), and Namibia Defence Force member Karl Kamusuvise (41) - were told that their trial is set to start on August 6. It is alleged that Kahira and Kaome murdered Austrian farmer Leopold Kober on his farm Bag-Bag some 70 km northwest of Okahandja on November 1 2000. The killers allegedly lay in wait for Kober and killed him by shooting him with an AK-47 rifle which the NDF had issued to Kamusuvise. The latter is alleged to have negligently lost the firearm, or to have failed to safeguard it. After shooting Kober, Kahira and Kaome allegedly stole a 3006 rifle, binoculars, a knife, keys, a torch, a water container and a pillow. For this, they are charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances. They are furthermore charged with malicious damage to property, for allegedly having set fire to some of the stolen items. The last three charges are counts of illegal possession of the AK-47 and its ammunition, and the theft of the AK-47, alternatively using the assault rifle without its owners consent, or having failed to safeguard the rifle or having lost it through negligence. Kahira and Kaome remain in custody. Kamusuvise is free on bail. |
