N$5,3m robbery trial set for October 15

WERNER MENGES

THE nine people accused of involvement in the armed robbery of N$5,3 million in the Brakwater area in November 2000 will go on trial in the High Court on October 15.

Several of the suspects appeared before Judge Sylvester Mainga in the High Court in Windhoek for a pre-trial hearing on Thursday to hear that they must be ready to go on trial - whether with or without legal representation - come October 15.

Their trial has been set down to run to November 15.
The main charge against the nine is robbery with aggravating circumstances.

It is alleged that six of them staged the heist in which N$5,3 million was stolen from a security company vehicle transporting cash to northern Namibia on November 17 2000.

Three of the accused - Immanuel Handjaba Kaukungua, Joseph Heinrich and Bertha Nanduda - are alleged to have later tried to help hide the stolen fortune, of which some N$4 million remains missing.

The three are set to go on trial together with Hyacinth James Ningisa, Macdonald Kambonde, Hendrick Henny Tsibande, Brandon David Omswa Similo, Arvo Tsheeli Natangwe Machel Haipinge, and Ismael Oaeb.

Another two suspected participants in the robbery, South African nationals Mike Sandile Mabena and Vincent Mabuza, are still in custody in South Africa, where they have appealed against a court order that they be extradited to Namibia.
