UDF leader raps SFF brutality

TANGENI AMUPADHI

UNITED Democratic Front (UDF) leader, Justus Garoeb, yesterday brought complaints to the National Assembly over activities of the Police's camouflage unit - the Special Field Force (SFF).

Garoeb's complaint follow several similar complaints that have been raised by members of the public.

The UDF leader said he wanted the Minister of Home Affairs, Jerry Ekandjo, to explain next week under which law the Police SFF "are raiding houses in Katutura in the late hours for stolen items like television sets, hi-fi's, video recorders and who are confiscating everything for which you cannot produce proof of ownership without themselves issuing receipts for what they have seized".

Garoeb asked how Police would account for the items "seized without issuing receipts" and what recourse the public has if their goods go missing in the hands of the Police. He said the Police officers did not wear any name tags.

"What remedy does the public have to reclaim property for which they do not have proof of ownership because it was a cash transaction more than 10 years ago or a birthday present?" asked the senior politician.

He wanted to know if the issuing of search warrants no longer applied.
