Furniture Mart pay dispute lingers on

HUGH ELLIS

THERE was still some doubt yesterday over whether a salary increase promised by management of a furniture chain, which was meant to be paid on Monday, had in fact been given to workers.

Workers at Furniture Mart in Windhoek downed tools on Tuesday to protest not being given the increase on time. The company claimed bureaucracy at head office was delaying the payment.

The General Manager: Operations of Furniture Mart Namibia, Philip Tromp, said late yesterday the money had been transferred.

"The money is being put in (to bank accounts) as we speak. I spoke to the bank myself to confirm," said Tromp.

He said close to 200 people had to be paid, so it took a bit of time, but should have been completed by the end of yesterday. He had had "no feedback from workers yet".

When workers received their pay slips on Monday they noticed no increase in their wages. Tromp said earlier the increase had only been approved by a directors' meeting at the head office in Botswana on Friday.

The leadership of the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (Manwu), which represents workers at Furniture Mart, is meeting today to decide on possible action.

On Tuesday, Tromp issued workers with copies of a letter from Head Office in Botswana saying a wage increase had been approved, and would be paid in yesterday as soon as it had gone through the banks.
