Finn has nightmare taxi ride

TANGENI AMUPADHI

A TRAUMATISED Finnish citizen who was abducted in broad daylight has warned people using taxis in a secluded part of Klein Windhoek to be on the alert.

The man, who works for the Namibian Government, said he got onto a taxi outside the Heinitzburg hotel just before 16h00 on Friday, having had lunch there.

The man, who asked not to be named fearing that the robbers might identify him, said the taxi driver politely asked if he could first drop three students at Unam (University of Namibia).

But the taxi drove past Unam, and when the Finn asked why they were driving past the university, the driver said they were going to "Unam college" where they were accommodated.

The taxi then crossed the Western Bypass where it meets Mandume ya Ndemufayo Avenue and continued into the Khomas Hochland.

"They drove a couple of kilometres and stopped and held a gun to my head. Obviously the taxi driver was with the plot," he said

With one of the men in back holding him by the neck, the other robbers took his shoes, a belt, a cellphone and the wallet containing money and bank cards.

"They said they are going to kill me because I'm a bad racist. But I told them I'm not a racist, I'm from Finland. Please, save my life, I have three kids."

They then began debating, in Afrikaans and English, about killing him as he might recognise them later. Eventually the apparent leader of the gang said they should let him go.

They booted him out of the car and he began walking back.
Police did not respond to queries about the incident.
