Furniture Mart workers strike over wage delays

HUGH ELLIS

EMPLOYEES of Furniture Mart's Independence Avenue branch went on strike yesterday after a promised salary increase was not paid to them due to bureaucratic delays at the shop's head office.

The striking workers, numbering 40, demanded to know why they were not paid an increase this month, as per an earlier agreement with management.

Apparently, a previous manager had reached a tentative agreement for a wage increase to be paid yesterday. But when workers received their pay slips they noticed no increase in wages.

Philip Tromp, the General Manager: Operations of Furniture Mart Namibia, said the increase had only been approved by a directors meeting at the head office is Botswana on Friday.

As a result, the paperwork was not completed in time for workers to get increased salaries today.

Tromp said he had given workers letters promising they would get paid their increases today, after they had demanded some documentary proof the company would fulfil its promises. The workers then agreed to return to their jobs.

Tromp said the pay given to employees was reasonable, especially as it also included the options of a funeral plan and medical scheme.

Tromp was in the news recently when he was arrested after allegedly calling a worker a "baboon". The case was brought before the Windhoek magistrates court and is still pending. Tromp denies the charge.
