Pie City crumbles

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

PIE City, which owns five outlets in Windhoek, is closing down after alleged inside thefts brought the company's operations to its knees.

Pie City owner Jonkheer de Ryckman de Betz confirmed yesterday that the business was winding up but declined to give details.

"Officially, we are still not closed. It won't be tomorrow, it won't be Saturday. Hold it (the story) back. Give me a buzz on Monday," said De Ryckman de Betz.

Worried employees told The Namibian that De Ryckman de Betz told them on Monday that the outlets at Maerua Park, Wernhil, Katutura Shoprite Complex, Katutura Hospital and Windhoek Central Hospital will shut today.

According to employees, they were asked to sign some documents this morning to finalise the liquidation of the company after which they must collect their monthly salaries and leave their postal addresses for further payments.

However, some employees yesterday vowed not to sign the papers until De Ryckman de Betz spoke to their union representatives.

The employees are members of the Namibia Wholesale and Retail Workers' Union and Namibia Food and Allied Workers' Union.
