Land body gets members

THE National Assembly on Tuesday appointed five members to the third Land Reform Advisory Commission (LRAC).

Vincent Likoro, David Shimwino, Alwina Swartbooi and Bernhard Kamwi all served on the previous Commission. Magdalena Kukuri is the only new member appointed by the NA.

In terms of the Agricultural (Commercial) Land Reform Act 6 of 1995, the NA is expected to appoint five of the LRAC's 14 members on the recommendation of the Minister of Lands, Resettlement and Rehabilitation.

The other nine members are nominated or designated by their institutions and offices for appointment by the Lands Minister.

The nine members are Frans Tsheehama and Harry Tjipueja from the Ministry of Lands, Stoney Steenkamp and Sophia Kasheeta from Agriculture, Elizabeth Iipumbu and Semi Simaniso were nominated by the Namibia National Farmers' Union, while Johan Brand and Janine van der Merwe were designated by the Namibia Agricultural Union.

George Katjiuongua represents the Agricultural Bank of Namibia (AgriBank).

The commission is expected to make recommendations to the Lands Minister or to render advice in relation to any power conferred upon the Minister by the Land Reform Act.
