Nujoma says NDF ready to return to DRC 'at any time'

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

PRESIDENT Sam Nujoma says Namibia, Angola and Zimbabwean troops are ready to go back to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to defend president Joseph Kabila's governments against any rebel invasions.

Speaking at the end of the state visit by Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong on Friday, Nujoma said defence ministers of the allied forces were instructed to be on high alert and to monitor developments in the DRC.

"We will go back," Nujoma said when he expanded on a joint communique signed by him and Luong.

In the joint communique, read out by Foreign Affairs Minister Hidipo Hamutenya, the two presidents condemned "international terrorism in any form and manifestation".

They expressed their determination "to co-operate with the international community to combat terrorism at all levels on the basis of the respect for the United Nations Charter, fundamental principles of international law ensuring world peace, stability and security".

They also welcomed the ending of conflict in the DRC, Angola and Sierra Leone and the progress made in the peace process.

The two presidents said the African Union and the adoption of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) came at the right time.
Vietnam promised to send two experts to Namibia to help produce rice in the North East of the country.

The agreement signed by the two presidents covered co-operation on protocols between the two foreign ministries, agriculture and trade while the heads of the two chambers of commerce Dr Leake Hangala (Namibia) and Vu Tien Loc (Vietnam) signed a separate co-operation agreement.

Nujoma and Luong agreed to extend their co-operation to the fields of forestry, fishing, mining, energy, tourism and to enhance small and medium enterprises.

Luong's entourage of 85 left for Angola on Friday. He was also scheduled to visit the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), France and the Middle East.
