Tuesday, October 29, 2002 - Web posted at 9:42:17 GMT Caprivi 'sorcery' hearing delayed by death CHRISPIN INAMBAOA CASE in which a Swapo leader in the Caprivi claims he was ousted from his position through witchcraft could not be heard by a traditional court last week because of a death in the accused's family. |
|
The witchcraft case pits Linus Kani, Swapo's ex-Regional Co-ordinator, against Florence Simaimbulwa, who beat him in an internal party election in July for the Regional Co-ordinator post. Kani, a Swapo veteran, who only managed 14 votes against the 33 cast for Simaimbulwa, has since alleged she used witchcraft. The case was expected to be heard on Wednesday before tribal judges at the Bukalo Traditional Authority, some 44 km outside Katima. However, sources said Simaimbulwa had asked for a postponement because of the death of a relative. At the heart of the case is a letter allegedly penned by Simaimbulwa in which a witch doctor was praised for a "job well done". An elderly Zambian witch doctor was allegedly used by Simaimbulwa. She allegedly asked the "old man" to send her more herbs to "protect" her from Kani who she claimed was plotting to kill her through witchcraft. It is alleged that she wrote that Kani was refusing to surrender the office and car keys and that she needed a prescription of his "strongest" herbs to reverse a life-threatening situation. Sources have indicated the aim of the case is not to annul the outcome of the poll but to prevent the accused from allegedly using witchcraft against the ousted politician. Simaimbulwa has declined to speak to The Namibian about the case and has referred all questions to Kani. |
