NBC man gets N$1,7m farewell package

CHRISPIN INAMBAO

THE NBC has finally reached a severance agreement with its former Director General Dr Ben Mulongeni, which will see the State broadcaster's ex-chief walk away with a package of N$1,78 million.

Mulongeni's exit package was reportedly concluded this week following weeks of intense negotiations.

Both Mulongeni and Uazuva Kaumbi, Chairperson of the NBC Board, yesterday confirmed that a settlement had been reached but declined to give details.

"Yes we have reached a settlement, but I cannot divulge it to you," said Kaumbi. Mulongeni only said the settlement was "satisfactory" to him and to the lawyers who negotiated on his behalf.

The former NBC DG said he had not yet seen the full details of the settlement.

An NBC insider close to the negotiations said Mulongeni's settlement entails a golden handshake of N$1 million, the NBC paying off the N$500 000 balance on his house as well as the N$280 000 balance on his 4X4 Land Rover.

The NBC will also pay for a farewell party to be hosted for him some time next week. It has previously been reported that N$10 000 has been set aside for the function.

The send-off party was apparently demanded by NBC staffers.
Initially Mulongeni, who was forced to quit, had demanded that the NBC pay him N$4,4 million, inclusive of his severance package.

That amount was based on the total amount Mulongeni would have earned had he worked at the NBC until reaching retirement age of 55.
