Veld fires wreak havoc in the North

OSWALD SHIVUTE

VELD fires are destroying grazing in parts of the North, Uuvudhiya Constituency Regional Councillor Amutenya Ndaafa told The Namibian yesterday.

Ndaafa said the fire had ravaged a large grazing area in the west of the salt pan close to Etosha Park. The fire, believed to have been triggered by lightning on Tuesday morning, is reportedly now heading towards Okahao.

Ndaafa appealed to farmers in the Uuvudhiya Constituency, the Namibia Defence Force, the Police and other Government departments to help extinguish the fire before it gets out of control.

The Namibian learned that a number of farmers in Uuvudhiya had teamed up to extinguish the fire. However, their efforts are being hampered by a lack of proper equipment.

The problem has been aggravated by the lack of water and the lack of a fire brigade in the North.

Christian Shikolele from Ombombili village in Oshikoto Region said the fire destroyed his house this week. A resident from Etilasa in Omusati Region, Silas Kambwa ka Shilongo, also reported that his house had been razed by fire.
