Monday, October 28, 2002 - Web posted at 8:35:42 GMT 'Designer' thief gets 18 months WERNER MENGESA Rehoboth builder who chose burglary and theft as the means to finance his desire to wear trendy, designer label clothing heard last week that he is to suffer the fashion disaster of having to wear prison garb for the next 18 months. |

Magistrate Andre le Roux sentenced building contractor employee Ambrosius Boois in the Rehoboth Magistrate's Court on Thursday, after Boois pleaded guilty to housebreaking with intent to steal and theft. The 25-year-old Boois received his sentence of 24 months imprisonment, of which six months were suspended for five years, two days after his arrest on Tuesday. The explanation that Boois gave the court indicated that he may be regarded as a particularly misguided fashion victim. He told the Magistrate that although he was employed and earning some N$1 500 a month, he decided to break into his aunt's house in Block E at Rehoboth earlier this month to steal some N$1 050 in household items, which he then sold. He committed the crime because he wanted to be as trendy as other young people of his age, Boois explained. He also wanted to wear Levi's jeans and All Star sneakers, he said. To improve his street credibility by having the right labels on his pants and shoes, he decided that burglary and theft would be the way to raise money for this goal. He explained that he needed the money fast because he had an opportunity to buy Levi's jeans and All Stars for the very desirable price of only N$500. Magistrate Le Roux, noting that housebreaking is a particularly prevalent offence, decided to impose a direct prison term for this crime, which, although it might be quite fashionable in some circles, still remains a serious offence. Although Boois will now not be able to wear Levi's and All Stars for some time, part of his wish will indeed come true. He will at last look like his peers, since he will be fitted out in the same green prison clothing that all his fellow inmates wear. Tania Tait prosecuted. Boois did not have legal representation. |
